How to turn off Read Receipts in WhatsApp and Facebook

WhatsApp and Facebook both have a read receipt feature that notifies the sender when their message has been read. Read receipts are an important part of messaging app communication. It enables users to determine whether or not their message was received by the intended recipient. The read receipt function is supported by WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger which all have different ways of notifying the sender that their message has been read. You can turn off read receipts at any time if you prefer to keep things more private and don’t want the sender to know when you’ve read their message.

If you keep your read receipts on WhatsApp, for example, when the recipient has read the message, a blue tick appears next to it.

For WhatsApp

If you want to turn off read receipts in WhatsApp then follow the steps given below:

Step:1  Open WhatsApp on your mobile phone.

Step:2  Select the three dots in the top right corner of your screen to go to Settings.

Step:3  Now you have to click on the ‘Account’ tab.

Step:4  Go to ‘Privacy’ section.

Step:5  Select the option which says “Turn off read receipts.”

People in group chats, on the other hand, will still be able to see whether you have read messages, and turning off the read receipts option for yourself will prevent you from seeing if someone has read your messages.

For Facebook

Unfortunately, there is no way to turn off read receipts in Facebook Messenger. Active On is a setting in settings that allows you to disable the Active Now banner that appears next to your name every time you log in. It also displays the last time you were online, and if you turn this off, your friends will not be able to see that information. This can be found by going to the Messenger app > clicking on the profile icon > Toggling it ‘Off’ from Active ‘On.’ There is, however, a workaround for reading a message without informing the sender.

  • After receiving a new message on Facebook just simply turn on Airplane Mode from your phone’s Settings, which will disable Internet and network connections on the device.
  • You can then open Messenger and read the message without needing to be connected to the Internet.
  • Close the app and swipe it out of your app drawer once you’ve finished reading.
  • Airplane mode can now be turned off. Until you open the app again, the sender will not be notified that you have read their message.

More about WhatsApp

WhatsApp is a free smartphone messenger app to download. WhatsApp sends messages, images, audio, and video over the internet. The service is very similar to text messaging services; however, because WhatsApp sends messages over the internet, it is significantly less expensive than texting. You can also use WhatsApp on your computer by visiting the WhatsApp website and downloading the app for Mac or Windows. Because of features like group chatting, voice messages, and location sharing, it is very popular among teenagers.

WhatsApp users can share their location in real time through text messages. They can also use WhatsApp to organise contact lists so that they can quickly send messages to large groups of people in group chats. The best feature of WhatsApp is that it allows users to communicate with people who live in other countries without incurring the international text message charges.

For Facebook

Facebook is a social media and networking website owned by Facebook, Inc. in the United States. It was founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, along with fellow Harvard College students and roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes, and takes its name from the face book directories that are commonly given to American university students. Initially, membership was restricted to Harvard students, but it has since expanded to include students from other North American universities and, since 2006, anyone over the age of 13. Facebook ranked seventh in global internet usage in 2020, with 2.8 billion monthly active users. It was the most popular mobile app in the decade of 2010.

Facebook can be accessed from any device that has Internet access, including computers, tablets, and smartphones. Users can create a profile after registering, which includes personal information. They can share text, photos, and multimedia with other users who have agreed to be their “friend” or, depending on the privacy settings, with the general public. Users can also use Facebook Messenger to communicate directly with one another, join common-interest groups, and receive notifications about their Facebook friends’ and pages’ activities.
