Facebook owned photo and video sharing social networking app, Instagram has more than 750 million users all over the world. It was launched in October 2010 with some basic features. Later Kevin Systrom, Instagram founder, launched Instagram Direct at a press event in New York on December 12, 2013.
Instagram Direct is Instagram’s private messaging feature. Through Instagram Direct, users can send photos or videos that they take, posts they saw in the feed, disappearing photos and videos, other user’s Instagram stories, hashtags, and location pages.
However, it is not uncommon to find that you have deleted those very important Instagram messages or conversations accidentally. And sometimes we’re in a situation where we need those deleted direct messages , It happens a lot certainly with many of us, and it is frustrating.

Download Data
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Download Data
Type your Email where you’d like to receive your Instagram Data
Enter your Password and click next
You’ll receive an email from Instagram, I received the email in an hour
Open up the email received from Instagram and click on download data
Extract/Unzip DATA
The downloaded file will be in zip format which contains your Instagram pictures, settings, locations, stories, messages and much more. You’ll need to extract the data to retrieve deleted Instagram messages. Install the application “Easy Unrar,Unzip& Zip” from Google Playstore and extract the data.
Load the Deleted Instagram Messages
Once you extract the data you’ll find these files.
All of your direct messages are stored in messages.json file. You’ll need anjson editor to read those messages. Install Json Genie (Editor) from Play store.
To load the deleted messages follow below steps.
Open the application Json Genie (Editor)
Click on menu button at top left and click on “Open JSON File”
Now look for the file messages.json and open it
It will load the deleted ins messages in below format.
Click on any number and you’ll see the name of the participants and No. of messages exchanged between two of you.
Click on conversation and you’ll find all your direct messages with that particular person. These messages also have the deleted messages.
Simply go back and select another number to read conversation with other person.
That’s an easy way to recover deleted messages from Instagram. There are many websites which claim to recover deleted messages. These are scam websites which may use your username and password for malicious purpose. We’d suggest to not fill any forms on these websites.
